ABOUT
"ELSPETH NEEDS A MONSTER. THE MONSTER MIGHT BE HER.
Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder - she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.
But nothing comes for free, especially magic.
When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, she is thrust into a world of shadow and deception. Together, they embark on a dangerous quest to cure the town of Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. As the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret
THOUGHTS
This book was so interesting and unique. The magic system was like nothing I've heard before, and I loved how the families' names came from different trees. The whole book was such a fun concept, and I devoured every part of it. I'm curious to see what else Rachel Gillig has in her backlist. This is also PERFECT for spooky season (hence why I waited).
RECOMMENDATION
This book is perfect if you love fantasy, but want something that's original and just not the typical book about fae and humans in faerie-worlds. There were no supernatural creatures in this book, only humans using magic. I really recommend you go read this book, it's only a duology, so you're not committing to a series that'll take you AGES to finish.
To sum up – a perfect read for those who really enjoy fantasy, but crave something unique and original that's also a perfect seasonal read!
